Sturg
Interesting idea of mixing the different Mario generations with Ice Levels. I loved the PNG goomba walking sprite. Something about his bouncy strut really hit home. The SMB1 was a nice representation, though I feel that the other two dimensions weren't cleaned up as well. The music quality and overall crampedness of the SMB3 portions didn't exactly work for me? The ever so slightly awkward bullet jumps weren't terribly great as well. The NSMB place, as charming as it is seeing a bunch of PNG objects clumping around, weren’t exactly on the same level of quality for obvious reasons. Still, I appreciate that you wanted to participate, even if you didn't use the terms like a party pooper
Zatsupachi
The major gripe with this level is that it has a start and an end without proper escalation, in terms of difficulty or gimmick. The general theme of the ice worlds of various Mario games is a neat touch but it does nothing with it besides providing rooms to move across-- it's more level the plays more or less the same as the other rooms.
Rameau's Nephew
A sort of variety pack level, without much really connecting the individual parts besides a general winter theme. Of the three areas, I think I preferred the SMB1 sections the most, as they follow the general sensibilities of the original game while adding some things that weren't possible in the original, but which hardly feel out of place. The SMB3 areas, in contrast, felt a bit generically SMBXy, with a minor theme of bullet jumping, and the NSMB areas didn't really seem to have much of an identity at all. As is generally a risk with this style of level, we shift through areas a bit too quickly, to the point where none of them can really develop any of their ideas; as such, the level lacks focus.
Everything looks pretty decent, and I like details like the snow and frozen waterfalls, but for a level that presents itself for being primarily *about* style shifts, the æsthetics don't really carry the level, nor do the various styles have any real themes or motifs (beyond snow) in common. There's also some graphical goofs in the NSMB section: Hammer Bro. death graphics are cut off, and the Goombas just use SMB3 graphics.
+ Snow is a lovely thing
+ SMB1 sections mildly interesting
- Generally unfocused and underdeveloped
- Ostensibly goes all-in for style, but shies away from bold æsthetic choices.
Other: It's a bit odd that the barefoot Koopas develop shoes upon being knocked out of their shells. Then again, I wouldn't want to go barefoot in the snow, either...
Author's notes
The Frozen Dimensions
So I wanted to participate so I made this style-mixing level. It probably won't be that great but at least I hope you enjoy it.
There are also 5 dragon coins in the SMB3-styled sections.
